Seeking a Safe Haven

Through a blend of documentary film and community-based research, the project highlights both the challenges and the support systems shaping refugee resettlement.

In partnership with Dr. Hadidja Nyiransekuye — award-winning social worker, scholar, and advocate — and a team of students, we co-created a documentary amplifying the voices of former refugees who resettled in North Texas. The project, sponsored by the Council for Social Work, combined youth-led media production with community-based research to explore the networks and structures that support refugee resettlement.

This collaboration demonstrates how research and storytelling can work hand-in-hand to shift narratives, foster empathy, and inform practice. By guiding students through the documentary process and centering the lived experiences of refugees, the project not only generated valuable insights for the field of social work but also provided a model for how media and evaluation can be used as tools for advocacy, education, and community impact.
